Yorgenis “Yoyo” Danger García 2-3 November

Yorgenis “Yoyo” Danger García

2-3 November 2019

Our journey with maestro Yorgenis Danger García continues! Together we will go on studying the mayor orishas Eleggua, Yemayá and Oyá. We keep working methodically with our technique and our understanding of rhythm and movement. Saturday we do it to recorded music but on Sunday we spice things up with LIVE MUSIC from Euro Rumba Ashé and guest musicians!

“Yoyo”, with his extensive knowledge, extraordinary pedagogical skills and great willingness to share his culture, is one of the most sought-after teachers for festivals and workshops, so it is a great privilege and pleasure to welcome him back to Stockholm on a regular basis!

SATURDAY we start (as one should!) with Elegguá who owns all roads, crossroads and doors. Without his help nothing is possible. He is the messenger between heaven and earth, and is said to be present everywhere and at all times, watching us humans and all our actions. He is generally represented as a child, mischievous and playful. His colours are black and red, and in some cases black and white.

We go on with Oyá, a fierce and powerful female warrior. She keeps the gates of the cemetery and controls the dead. She is mistress of the storms and lightning (centellas) and dances wielding her black iruke and when she goes to war her machete.

Next up is Yemayá, mistress of the sea, serious and powerful. Her dance represents the movements of the ocean, from calm and tranquil to huge waves hitting against the rocks. She is also the great mother figure, mother to all living things and her character is nurturing and protective. Her colours are different shades of blue with white and silver.

We finish the day concentrating on chachalukafun, with the ambition to help everybody master this tricky rhythm!

SUNDAY we keep working with the same three orishas,  but turning up the VOLUME and TEMPERATURE with LIVE MUSIC! The drums will give you that extra push and energy and joy!

We urge you to make the most of this fabulous opportunity and strongly recommend you to take all classes or as many as you can, as we work concentrating on specific orishas, building from the base, widening and heightening our knowledge!

Together with the great maestro Yorgenis Danger García we continue exploring the orishas Eleggua, Yemayá and Oyá, working methodically and in depth with our technique and understanding of rhythm and movement. As you know, repetition is the mother of all learning!

“Yoyo”, with his extensive knowledge, extraordinary pedagogical skills and great willingness to share his culture, is one of the most sought-after teachers for festivals and workshops, so it is a great privilege and pleasure to welcome him back to Stockholm on a regular basis!

Here’s a reminder of what we did last time:

INTRODUCING A NEW CONCEPT! Together with one of our favourite dancers and teachers, Yorgenis Danger García we initiate a project where “Yoyo” will come back regularly to Stockholm to work intensively and methodically to build our theoretical knowledge and dance technique and skills. Instead of a regular workshop we will this time focus on three orishas – Eleggua, Yemayá and Oyá, to really go deep into the dance and work on essential elements in Yoruba – like torso and bounce, and of course the different rhythms, especially chachalukafun which very many students find it hard to master. We will also take time to study the theory behind the music, songs and dance.

Yoyo with his extensive knowledge, extraordinary pedagogical skills and great willingness to share his culture is a perfect guide on this adventure into the depths of the Yoruba world!

Saturday we start with Elegguá who owns all roads, crossroads and doors. Without his help nothing is possible. He is the messenger between heaven and earth, and is said to be present everywhere and at all times, watching us humans and all our actions. He is generally represented as a child, mischievous and playful. His colours are black and red, and in some cases black and white.

We go on with Yemayá, mistress of the sea, serious and powerful. Her dance represents the movements of the ocean, from calm and tranquil to huge waves hitting against the rocks. She is also the great mother figure, mother to all living things and her character is nurturing and protective. Her colours are different shades of blue with white and silver.

After that we will take the opportunity to concentrate on chachalukafun, with the ambition to help everybody master this tricky rhythm!

We finish the day with Oyá, a fierce and powerful female warrior. She keeps the gates of the cemetery and controls the dead. She is mistress of the storms and lightning (centellas) and dances wielding her black iruke and when she goes to war her machete.

Sunday we pick up where we left off, bearing in mind the motto of “repetition is the mother of all learning!” – repeating and perfecting what we achieved on Saturday and adding some new elements.

This will be huge learning experience, so take the chance to make the most of this opportunity! We strongly recommend you to take all classes or as many as you can, as we work concentrating on specific orishas, building from the base, widening and heightening our knowledge!

WELCOME!

The workshops will be held as usual at DOCH, Brinellvägen 58, but without Euro Rumba Ashé this time. They will come back from time to time to add a bit of extra flavour!

Yorgenis “Yoyo” Danger García 15-17 February 2019

Yorgenis “Yoyo” Danger García

15-17 February 2019

It’s with huge pleasure we invite you to a true Cuban dance weekend with one of our favourite dancers and teachers, Yorgenis Danger García!

“Yoyo” has loads of knowledge and enthusiasm and is committed to sharing that with you and help you on your way to plunge deeper into the Afro-Cuban culture and develop your dancing.

This time we start off FRIDAY NIGHT in a playful and energizing way with SALSA con AFRO, RUMBA y SON! A great way to kick off the weekend!

Her colour is different shades of blue with white and silver.

We finish the day with güiro, which is a different rhythm played not with batá drums but with one drum (tumbadora or conga), one guataca (cow bell) and three chekeré.   You can dance to all the different orishas with güiro, doing all the different steps that you do when you dance to batá drums. The rhythm stays the same, but the song changes.

Sunday we start with rumba – guaguancó, the playful game between man and woman where he tries to conquer her, with a “vacunao”, and she teases and seduces him and at the same time protects herself.

Then we go back to yoruba with the orisha Shangó, He is master of lightning, thunder and fire, as well as drums and dancing and male virility, and considered a king in the yoruba religion. When he dances he brings down the lightnings to his crotch to show his strength and virility! His colours are red and white (just as you can see in the photo of Yoyo).

We finish the day with palo, from the congo religion and culture. An extremely powerful and engaging dance where you work with the spirits of the dead and the earth, or go to war!

As always live music by Euro rumba ashé!

We also have a special treat SATURDAY NIGHT! To give a taste of “the real thing” and show you when it is you actually do these dances we are doing an authentic “TAMBOR” – a ceremony where you make offerings to the orishas and play, sing and dance for them. This is an opportunity not to be missed! More info when you sign up for the workshop!

It’s been a while – too long! – but now we have the great pleasure of welcoming back the brilliant Alfredo García Gonzalez to Stockholm! Below you can get a taste of what we did the last time.

Alfredo’s deep knowledge and desire to share it with you, along with his great teaching skills and attention to details, will help you a long way in developing your own dance and proficiency.

Saturday we dedicate to the YORUBA ORISHAS (deities), with live music by Euro rumba ashé!

We start with Elegguá who owns all roads, crossroads and doors. Without his help nothing is possible. He is the messenger between heaven and earth, and is said to be present everywhere and at all times, watching us humans and all our actions. He is generally represented as a child, mischievous and playful.

We go on with Oyá, a fierce and powerful female warrior. She keeps the gates of the cemetery and controls the dead. She is mistress of the storms and lightning (centellas) and dances wielding her black iruke and when she goes to war her machete.

We finish the day with Changó, a real he-man! He is master of lightning, thunder and fire, as well as drums and dancing and male virility, and considered a king in the yoruba religion. When he dances he brings down the lightnings to his crotch to show his strength and virility!

Sunday you will have the chance to dance Cuban contemporary! Alfredo has a solid training from the National school of art in Cuba (ENA) and has worked in several dance companies in Germany as well as Ballets Jazz Montreal. It’s recommendable, but not requiered, that you have some experience from for instance contemporary or jazz, to make the most of the class. Don’t miss this unique opportunity!

Then we go back to yoruba with the orisha Obbatalá, father of all the orishas and all humans, and master of all heads, as he was the one who molded the human bodies. He represents justice, peace and harmony and is a much respected and revered orisha.

We finish the day with arará , another religion and ethnic group, originating from the old kingdom of Dahomey, today’s Benin. We dance Gebioso who corresponds to Changó in yoruba, so you will have the opportunity to see and learn the difference in movement, musicality and expression.

To make the weekend complete, Saturday night there is a concert with LOS VAN VAN!  https://www.facebook.com/events/169542317067453/

We can offer tickets to a reduced price (450 SEK), just let us know!

*LIVE MUSIC*

New in the game? Here’s a short overview

* Rumba could be called the soul of Cuba. A secular, sensual – not to say sexual – and playful dance, where the man and the woman interact with each other. The woman entices the man with sensual, inviting movements and the man, improvising and showing off tries to trick her and “vacunar”, i.e “inject” her (get her pregnant) and she protects herself by covering her crotch with her skirt, her hand or a shawl.
* Orisha dances (from the Yoruba culture) on the other hand have a religious content. In these dances you dance for and represent a certain deity, such as Eleggua, the messenger between heaven and earth who opens and closes doorways and paths. Ochosi is the god of hunting, and Oyá is the keeper of the dead and lives at the entrance of the graveyard.
* Arará (from the ancient kingdom of Dahomey) is similar to the Yoruba religion, with more or less the same deities but with different names, and the music and instruments, as well as the movements differ.
* Palo (together with the secular dances yuka and makuta) has its origins in Congo and the Bantú people. Worshipping the dead and your ancestors is an all important part of the tradition, and the music and the dance are very intense, powerful and suggestive.

Musicians:

Guest percussionist Tomás Jr Jimeno will play live drums during the whole workshop. He has played in Conjunto Folclórico Nacional, Yoruba Andabo, Clave y Guaguancó and Muñequitos de Matanzas among others. An extremely prestigious CV…  Here in Sweden he was the leader of the group Obbara Iré, plus he has played at numerous festivals throughout Europe.

Euro Rumba Ashé is always playing at Rieback Dance workshops. This weekend Juan Carlos Sierra Hernandez and Chiqui Dixon will play for us.
