Yorgenis “Yoyo” Danger García
31 August-1 September 2019
Together with the great maestro Yorgenis Danger García we continue exploring the orishas Eleggua, Yemayá and Oyá, working methodically and in depth with our technique and understanding of rhythm and movement. As you know, repetition is the mother of all learning!
“Yoyo”, with his extensive knowledge, extraordinary pedagogical skills and great willingness to share his culture, is one of the most sought-after teachers for festivals and workshops, so it is a great privilege and pleasure to welcome him back to Stockholm on a regular basis!
Saturday we start with Elegguá who owns all roads, crossroads and doors. Without his help nothing is possible. He is the messenger between heaven and earth, and is said to be present everywhere and at all times, watching us humans and all our actions. He is generally represented as a child, mischievous and playful. His colours are black and red, and in some cases black and white.
We go on with Yemayá, mistress of the sea, serious and powerful. Her dance represents the movements of the ocean, from calm and tranquil to huge waves hitting against the rocks. She is also the great mother figure, mother to all living things and her character is nurturing and protective. Her colours are different shades of blue with white and silver.
After that we concentrate on chachalukafun, with the ambition to help everybody master this tricky rhythm!
We finish the day with Oyá, a fierce and powerful female warrior. She keeps the gates of the cemetery and controls the dead. She is mistress of the storms and lightning (centellas) and dances wielding her black iruke and when she goes to war her machete.
Sunday we keep working with the same orishas, and adding new steps and “toques” (rhythms).
We urge you to make the most of this fabulous opportunity and strongly recommend you to take all classes or as many as you can, as we work concentrating on specific orishas, building from the base, widening and heightening our knowledge!
Here’s a reminder of what we did last time:
The workshops will be held as usual at DOCH, Brinellvägen 58.
